Santiago to San Pedro

Wicked Campervan Trip Options: Pickup Santiago & Dropoff in San Pedro only

Ready for a long, surprising and mindblowing trip? Prepare yourself to visit amazing beaches, natural reserves, pristine night skies, volcanoes and out of this planet landscapes! You and your Wicked campervan will crush the road for more than two and a half thousand kilometers and believe us, it ́s gonna be the best freakin’ time of your lifes!

First from Santiago you can drive to Valparaíso, maybe one of the cities you will never forget. It’s architecture, the way the city was build and painted, the way you can live the culture and it’s characters it’s just great. If you wanna pay a visit to the main port in Chile, you should go to Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre (hills), where you can visit some of the best cafes and restaurants, have panoramic landscapes (special for photographers) or just walk anywhere you want, there’s a lot to enjoy.

Once you’re impressed enough with Valpo comes next step, quiet Pichidangui. A place where to spend the night, with nice beaches and great spots to watch osom sunsets. At Pichidangui you can find places where to eat fish and seafood empanadas, where to buy handicraft and even a supermarket to buy groceries or supplyes for the next ride to Fray Jorge National Park, up north in your way to mystic San Pedro de Atacama.

Once you leave Pichidangui drive to Fray Jorge National Park which has a nice singularity: Because of the weather characteristics, this National Park appears like an ambassador from southern landscapes between hills and the shoreline of northern chilean sea.

After visiting Fray Jorge, your next goal is to drive through the region till you get to the Elqui Valley, which is easy to reach if you go to La Serena first and from there you move to the Valley.

At Elqui Valley it’s gonna be easy for you tou pick a camping where to stay, but if you’re looking for some really special place you can go to camping Refugio del Ángel, located at Pisco Elqui town, or camping El Retiro, at Cochiguaz.

To leave Elqui you have to drive in direction to La Serena, where you can buy groceries or anything you need before keep moving towards Punta de Choros, number two of three National Parks you can visit in this part of Chile. You already went to Fray Jorge and now it’s time for you to see how cool is Punta de Choros. Here you can visit Isla Dama National Reserve and watch the Humboldt Penguin species, practice diving, recreational fishing, kayak, swimming or sailing; besides walking through the fishing villages and amazing pristine beaches.

Now we’re arriving to Llanos del Challe National Park, after driving for four hours and a few minutes. Here, besides the amazing nature, you’ll find camping and picnic areas, plus the chance to practice hiking in a spectacular environment. Also, depending the time of the year, you can see a mind blowing phenomenon: The Flowering Desert. A hard to believe show that usualy happens (when it happens) between september and october. Lots of colors and endless flowery fields right in front of your eyes in the desert!

From Llanos del Challe, we ́re moving to Punta Cachos and Nevado Tres Cruces National Park. First, Punta Cachos will amaze you with it’s marine biodiversity. There you can find one of the few seagrass fields in the country, and an inmense colony of green turtles.

Then comes Nevado Tres Cruces. If you are looking for a less crowded place where to go, this is your dreamed park! This park has a fraction of the tourists you’ll find up north in other parks and reserves. It has amazing climbing spots and a cool and huge variety of wildlife, from vicuñas and guanacos, to beautyfull flamingos and even pumas and condors!

Once you leave Nevado Tres Cruces you gotta keep going north in direction to Bahía Inglesa. When it comes to beautiful beaches, nice weather and perfect places to stop for eating good food, Bahía Inglesa should be in the first places of your list. Bahía is located six kilometers away from Caldera, where you will be in 12 minutes and where you can buy supplies, if needed. At Bahía you can practice diving, kitesurfing, recretional fishing, sailing and swimming. Also you can eat seafood empanadas and very cheap and big ceviches!

Now, after enjoying Bahía (where you will probably want to stay for ever) you gotta drive towards Pan de Azúcar National Park, located 128Km away from Caldera/Bahía Inglesa. At this park you can do trekking, biking, sport fishing, kayaking or photography, also you can camp and you will observe an incredibly varied flora and fauna, besides the amazing starry sky of northern Chile.

Pan de Azúcar is one of the last stops you have before arriving to San Pedro de Atacama, but before that, you should go look for some amazing photographs you can capture from Cerro Paranal, where Paranal Observatory is located.

Now it is time for the last stop, San Pedro de Atacama. This town, located at 2430 meters over sea level, is full of amazing landscapes and places where to go like the Moon Valley (an extention 15 Kms away from San Pedro that will make you feel really out of this world), the Lascar Volcano or the Piedra del Coyote viewpoint (located inside the Moon Valley). Also, you can practice sports like sandboard or trekking at the Death Valley. You can do biking or you can just lay your body on the salar lagoon where it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to swim; salt will give you a hand!!!

There’s no other way like the Wicked Campers way!!
